Technology
Sika's expertise in noise and vibration control has propelled our scientists and engineers to work as a team, developing innovative solutions to adress our customer's acoustic problems. Currently, Sika designs and manufactures expandable thermoplastic and rubber SikaBaffle products that will block noise, dirt, and moisture from propagating through the vehicle space frame. Sika Barrier products can be applied in many area of vehicle assembly to block airborne noise from entering through body apertures. SikaDamp products are butyl rubber based materials that are specially designed to reduce vibration-induced noise on moving object, while SikaReinforcer products are epoxy composite materials that provide localized stiffness to vehicle body sections. Consequently, structure-borne noises are reduced or eliminated.
In addition, SikaSeal products are heat-activated materials that flow and seal openings in the body structure. SikaFoam products are our new polyurethane foam technology that will be used in both acoustic and structural applications.

Reaction Mechanism
Most of our expandable products obtain their expansion via the decomposition of chemical blowing agents induced by heat. Expansion can also be achieved by physical mechanism where a low boiling solvent trapped in carrier expands at high temperatures. In the case of SikaFoam, the foaming process is controlled by carefully monitoring the amount of water added to the system. Water, catalyzed by special amines, reacts rapidly with part of the isocyanate in the system, generating carbon dioxide in situ for the expansion process.

Some material highlights in the past few years:
- 1992: 1992 SikaBaffles-240 introduced. Joint patent obtained with Dupont for this product which is revolutionary in its high expansion capabilities and 3-dimensional design.
- 1999: Introduction of SikaReinforcerâ products SR911 and SR912 as structural reinforcement to DaimlerChrysler
- 2000: Introduction of 2nd generation SikaBaffle SB-240 and SB-243
- 2001: Approval of SikaSeal 751 by DaimlerChrysler for its RS Minivans
- Commercialization of SikaDamp 630 for automotive and appliance markets.
- Addition of SikaFoams to the acoustic product line.

Innovations
SikaDamp 630:
Our new lightweight damper that is 50% improvement in acoustic performance than other products in the market.
SikaLastomer 607:
A new acoustic patch specially designed for polypropylene (filled and unfilled) and metal substrates, is a cost-effective acoustic patch for washing machines.
SikaSeal 751:
A specialty heat activated thermoplastic sealer, bonds and seals the floor pan to seat anchor cavities for DaimlerChrysler minivans. It has excellent adhesion to e-coat.
SikaSeal 754:
Our newest thermoplastic sealer that seals the body drain holes after the application of anti-corrosion e-coat. This sealer stops noise, dirt, moisture and other environmental debris from coming into the interior of a car.
SikaBarrier 600:
Thermoplastic barrier plugs that can be designed into customized shapes to plug any size hole in the vehicle passenger compartment or supplied as a sheet as a PVC-free alternative to acoustical barriers
